⚖ Multi-use correction

BACI counts a copper cathode as copper whatever it ends up in, so a chain’s upstream is mostly trade that never reaches the technology. The Count as control at the top right of the view selector switches between the two answers, and it restates every number on every view — levels, growth, CAGR, basket shares, RCA and market share alike.

Raw (the default) counts every dollar of trade in the chain’s HS basket exactly as BACI records it. Corrected scales each flow by the EXIOBASE direct use share for its (chain, HS-6 code) — the fraction of that product’s use that plausibly serves THIS chain. The Use share column in the HS-6 detail view is that number, per code, so any corrected figure there is reconcilable by hand.

Only Raw Material and Processed Material carry a measurement; for every other role the share is 1.0 by assumption — no correction applied: downstream inputs are already tech-specific (marked ≡). That is a modelling decision, not missing data, and it means a view holding no upstream rows reads identically under both bases. If you flip the control and nothing moves, that is the reason.

The scaling is applied in the R builder to each bilateral flow before any aggregation, which is what lets the country and segment totals be corrected at all — they sum the HS-6 dimension away, so no browser-side arithmetic could recover it. Corrected totals are not comparable to published BACI figures. Downloads state which basis produced them.

Provenance — where every number comes from

Nothing on this page is black-boxed. Trade values are BACI as recorded, with no arithmetic applied. Every ratio — shares, CAGR, RCA, market share — is computed in your browser from operands that are themselves shown as columns, so any figure here can be reproduced by hand in a spreadsheet. The one exception is SHAP mean |z|, which is the output of an external machine-learning model and cannot be recomputed from this page. | Click any column heading to sort. Hover a heading for its source and formula; the Column dictionary below gives both for every column, and the CSV and Excel downloads carry the same list.

⚠ Chain baskets overlap

A code such as 260400 (nickel ore) belongs to eight baskets and is counted at full value in each. The “all chains” total is therefore a sum of baskets, not a de-duplicated world figure.

◉ Coverage and caps

The country drill-down is capped at the top 30 exporters per chain (TOP_EXPORTERS = 30 in the slice builder), so the country selector in the HS-6 product detail and segment views lists only those 30, and so does Q5 · Who is growing, and in what? — which is built from the same cut, deliberately, so that every row it ranks can also be opened in Q2. That covers 83–91% of each chain’s trade; the tail is absent, not zero. The four headline views Q1–Q4 are uncapped — every BACI reporter is included.

Q5 opens on the Corrected basis, alone among the six views, because ranking is the operation that shared HS codes distort most: on Raw, one Australian ore shipment appears four times near the top of the table under four different chains. The toggle stays live — this is an opening position, not a lock — and the note under the table says what changes.

Electric vehicles (EVs) are not part of this tool — the explorer covers 10 of the 11 chains — and EVs have no EXIOBASE use shares either, so they receive no corrected figures for two independent reasons.
